First time joining Street Feeders of KL

On 22nd of February 2017, 12 of us from the German course went to give out food to the homeless around Masjid Negara and Dataran Merdeka with the students from French course through a non-goverment association named Street Feeders of KL. We gathered at the clock tower near Petaling Street and after that we walked to those locations where street friends AKA the homeless are located.

So when we were at Masjid Negara, the first thing that really shocked me was the number of homeless people present. Though I knew there were homeless people but I never knew the numbers are this huge. And to think that we only went to two places while there were other routes. I gave a packet of rice with sweet and sour chicken to a homeless and I simply asked how are you in Malay. He was so happy to receive the food and he smiled widely and replied very good. That has really made an impact on how I view things in my life. I have a hostel to go at the end of the day, I can choose what food I would like to have for each meal and yet when people asked me how is my day I would just replied it's not bad but it's not that good either.

Our street friends are homeless, every night they need to find a place where they can rest their head and when it rains they would need to find some where else where there's shelter. And here we are, we have more than enough but we still complain and grumble even the slightest thing like the food taste bad or water shortage again or the weather is too hot and so on. The day after that, when I saw my friends eating and picking out some food which they dislike, I thought back to the street friends, maybe they don't even like sweet and sour chicken or something but that's what they have to deal with. The saying beggars can't be choosers really saddens me at this point. People out there are starving and there's people who can choose which to eat and which they do not want to eat.

At the end of the day, we are all just human beings. Although they have less in the perspective of most, for me, they have more than what we have and that is a grateful heart. They know how to be content with whatever they had. Through this social engagement course, I realized the power of gratefulness and thankfulness can do to our lives. If we are angry for a minute, we lost a minute of joy in our life. I may not be expressive in speaking but I am really thankful to be in this German course with my fellow course mates. I appreciate each and every one of them in my life, for their presence alone gives me the motivation to be a better person. In every one of them and of course my lecturers too, I can learn infinite things each day from them and discovering my weakness and strengths.
